Rachel Williams

Rachel is a contemprary Irish-Sri Lankan British artist know for her ethereal, abstracted paintings remeniscent of land, coasts and water. Based in Canada, she lives by Lake Ontario and enjoys extended stays at her family haven in Donegal, on the rugged west coast of Atlantic Ireland.

Williams’ creative process is highly tactile, she creates richly layered and textured work with acrylic mediums, mixed media and unconventional tools. Her work starts with phyiscal, gestural bold strokes and builds with mark-making and reworking through adding and subtraction. This process that often ends with softer layers and glazes defines a style that is recognisable.

Deeply inspired by her time growing up in Ireland and the influence of music and art in her multicultrual surroundings, her body of work has evolved around a sense of homecoming and connection to place; ancestral ties and family generations past, present and future. The frame of inner landscapes, imagined places and otherworldy links has evolved with her artistic practice and extended periods of focused art residency in rural Donegal.
