Neighbours of Oakville

When the editor of the local publication Neighbours of Oakville invited me to be part of the January edition I knew it was an opportunity to kick start 2025.

The article was a chance to share about how the past 15 years living in Oakville has shaped our family and how my transition from a corporate job into working full time as an artist evolved.

For anyone who makes a big change in their career, no matter how many years after their initial career path started..it can feel like you’re never ready to be out or redefined as a different kind of person. For me it’s taken 15 years of being away from corporate life to finally start feeling comfortable about letting people know what I do now.

One of the things I have come to appreciate over the last few years, as I have been taking time to focus on building my art practice and a new career, is that the layers and skills required to do this are multi-faceted.

The skills of a solopreneur-artitst include websites, social media, networking and building relationships, getting to know the arts community, entering work into juried shows, attending events and classes, creating events to show work, planning & project management and, of course, balancing the books.

Just before Art In My Garden 2024, Niblock Real Estate hosted a preview on location at their offices on lakeshore.

It was a great event with over 60 attendees and an opportunity for a number of the artists to show work and meet one another, the sponsors Art In My Garden and guests of the Niblock Team

Artworks Oakville

Wave Therapy was selected to be part of the Artworks Oakville Juried show. Inspired by the the videography that was captured at the edge of the cliffs off Inis Meáin which is part of the Arran Islands on the west coast of Ireland.

The crashing force of The Atlantic Ocean when there’s nothing to stop the waves as they roll in and create a majestic display. Unstoppable, determined and demanding of your attention.

The waves help me - do you have a place that can take you away? A place that can make you feel relaxed or energised or that helps bring perspective?

Andrews, Luxury Womenswear

Just before Art In My Garden 2023, the team at Andrews Oakville reached out to collaborate with our event with an opportunity to show art in-store and help promote the date.

From our list of 50 + artists they chose 6 to display work inside the store as part of their 1 year celebrations and a VIP shopping event. Andrews Oakville is becoming one of the leading branches in the GTA with a steady and loyal client base.

The Secret Garden and Northern Stillness from my 2023 collection of work made it to the front window.

Elevated Elegance

When the editor of a local well known home and lifestyle magazine contacted me for an artist interview I was a little unnerved. I’m not shy in any way, and I have to say that chatting to strangers is one of the things I love to do most. But talking about myself and my art? That needed some convincing.

I wanted to leverage the interview to talk about a community art event I had founded in 2021 called Art In My Garden - hoping I would find a way to harness some sponsorship or funding to keep it going. None the less - this interview was going to be about me and they wouldn’t let me away.

In the end, it was a fantastic opportunity to share how I’ve moved into a career as a full time painter. I was able to share images of work I had sold in 2022 and looking back, it’s great to have this as part of an evolving journey with my art.

NOTE: West of the City Magazine has been relaunched as Best Side Magazine & continues to support the arts.
